Yanka Kupala (Ivan Dominikovich Lutsevich, 1882-1942) - a people's poet of Belorussia (1925) and member of the Belorussian Academy of Sciences (1928). His collections of verses ("The Psaltery Player" and "The Road of Life"), poems ("The Dream on the Burial Mound" and "The Lion's Grave") and plays ("Pavlinka" and "A Ravaged Nest") have close ties with classical Russian literature and are steeped in national tradition.

Admiral Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov (1802-1855) - a Russian naval commander. During the Crimean war of 1853-1856 he commanded the squadron that routed the Turkish fleet in the Battle of Sinop (1853). In February 1855, Admiral Nakhimov was appointed a commander of the port of Sevastopol and a military governor. He was fatally wounded on Malakhov Hill on June 28, 1855, and was buried in Sevastopol's Vladimir Cathedral.

The Allied convoys were special groups of transport and patrol ships organised by the United States and Great Britain, the Soviet Union's Allies in World War Two, to deliver cargoes from the North Atlantic to Soviet ports and back. They brought to the USSR arms, transport vehicles, food and other vital cargoes and took from the Soviet Union strategic raw materials. The first British convoy arrived at Arkhangelsk on August 31, 1941. In all, 42 convoys comprising 722 transport ships reached Soviet ports during the war and 36 convoys were sent back from the USSR (682 transport ships reached their ports of destination). That unprecedented experience of organising sea convoys in wartime in the forbidding conditions of the north was of great importance for the Allied victory over the common enemy.

Alexander Yaroslavich (1220-1263), a Novgorod prince, the Grand Duke of Vladimir and son of Prince Yaroslav Vsevolodovich, was called in 1240 the Nevsky after he defeated the Swedes on the River Neva. On April 5, 1242, Russian warriors led by Alexander the Nevsky routed the German knights on ice-bound Lake Chudskoye. That fight, which went down in history as the Battle on the Ice, allowed Russia to strengthen her western borders. Alexander the Nevsky was canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church.
